What’s the difference between boiler fuel types?

The UK heating environment is diverse, but we can identify a few main boiler fuel types. It is worth mentioning, however, that there are also alternative heating solutions. Rural and remote households are more likely to rely on a more old-fashioned approach, such as using coal-based heating or even wood-burning, for example. Yet many are considering switching to the most common boiler fuel types.

Gas Boilers

Almost 9 in 10 households in the UK use gas boilers for heating purposes. Gas heating is the cheapest solution, but it relies on a connection to the gas network. Not all households are connected to the gas main. Gas boilers have a low carbon footprint. But gas being a fossil fuel, it’s not a sustainable approach in the long term.

LPG Boilers

Households tend to consider liquid petroleum gas boilers as a conversion for gas boilers. LPG is considered a safe and energy-efficient alternative. However, LPG boilers have an external tank, so households need to constantly refill their tank. While being energy-efficient, LPG is not a cost-saving solution as prices are on the rise.

Oil Boilers

Oil boilers are a recurring alternative to gas for rural properties that are not connected to the gas network. The UK counts around 1.5 million households that use an oil boiler. Oil boilers also need an external tank that requires monitoring and refilling. Oil costs can be high, making it hard to save money. Kerosene is the best choice to keep costs low.
