Hard water

Hard water is something that can vary depending on where you live. There are plenty of resources online that will be able to tell you just how hard or soft your water is. The hardness of your water depends on the quantity of minerals. Calcium and magnesium in large quantities can run through your central heating system and start creating limescale. This limescale is what causes the problem.

Limescale is something you find on a lot of your appliances, right? The kettle is one of the most common appliances where you’ll see it, and so it’s important to get rid of this where possible or at least reduce it as much as you can.

If you allow this to build-up, then you will start to see problems occurring in the appliances themselves and also within your central heating system. It acts as an insulator and therefore means that your boiler is using more energy to power those appliances. So much so that eventually it could lead to boiler failure if you don’t do anything about it. So it’s good to look at all your appliances that use water and to regularly maintain it so that you’re reducing the limescale where possible.

By reducing it, you help to maintain the appliances for longer, which can be good for your wallet. There are plenty of products and things you can use to help reduce limescale, with one example being baking soda and vinegar. Make sure you’re tackling limescale if you live in a hard water area.
